COVID-19 testing

COVID-19 saliva testing is available at Jovic Primary Care and Walk-in Clinic, 1935 N. Capitol Ave. The saliva test is considered as accurate as the nasal swab but less invasive and uncomfortable.

Riley Rally

Riley Rally, a virtual event for the public to cheer on Riley children, will be 7-8 p.m. Nov. 18. The rally will replace the traditional Riley Children’s Foundation luncheon, which kicks off the holiday season giving campaign.

Participants will be able to meet the Riley Champions and the new Junior Champions, hear updates from Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and donate. Presenting sponsor Faegre Drinker will match the first $15,000 in individual donations. The Indianapolis Colts will match the first $150,000 in individual gifts made through Dec. 31.

Annual toy drive

The WRTV 20th Annual Toy Drive is accepting toys and donations. Online donations will be accepted through Dec. 11 at wrtv.com/toydrive.

The 30-minute toy-drive special will air at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. Chief meteorologist Kevin Gregory will be the master of ceremonies.

This year, WRTV will host a a toy Collection Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5 at participating Simon Malls. New, unwrapped toys or monetary donations will be accepted at the following locations:

• Greenwood Park Mall, dining pavilion.
• Circle Centre Mall, Bella Pizzeria in the food court.
• Castleton Square Mall, food court near Think Geek.
• Fashion Mall at Keystone, Fashion Café.
• Hamilton Town Center, between Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Bella Pizzeria.

Purple Star School

Shortridge High School received the Indiana Purple Star School designation by the Indiana Department of Education. Shortridge is one of the first schools to receive such recognition, which honors schools that have displayed a commitment to service members, veterans, students and families with a military connection.

Shortridge is an ambassador for the Purple Star program for Indianapolis Public Schools. The Purple Star program helps military families find schools that understand the educational hurdles they face.

Boy Scouts’ highest achievement 

Ernest R. Wilkins III, a member of Boy Scouts Troop 269, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Wilkins, a student at Pike High School, installed four French drains at 28th Street Church of God in Christ to prevent flooding in the basement.

COVID-19 posed several challenges to the project, causing delays. Wilkins also had to create a plan for social distancing for volunteers to complete the job while avoiding spreading the respiratory illness.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouts of America. Only about four percent of Scouts earn the ranking.
