U.S. Shatters Daily Record of COVID-19 Cases, Marks 11th Straight Day of 100K New Infections

The U.S. reported at least 172,000 new coronavirus cases Friday, shattering its one-day record while the country is in the throes of another deadly surge.

The 172,009 cases documented as of 8:25 p.m. Friday EST by a Johns Hopkins University tracker easily surpassed the previous record of 153,496 set just the day before. It also marked the 11th consecutive day the nation had more than 100,000 infections, after not exceeding that total once since the outbreak began in February.

The U.S. reported 1,382 coronavirus-related deaths Friday — up 458 from the previous day, according to the Johns Hopkins tracker.

Texas and California this week became the first states to surpass one million coronavirus cases since the pandemic began earlier this year. By comparison, only nine other countries worldwide have topped that number.

As of Friday evening, the U.S. has more than 10.7 million coronavirus cases and 244,000 related deaths — both tops globally.
